The Greene County Veterans Service Agency is proud to announce that the 2025 Greene County Memorial Veteran Award will be presented posthumously to Private First Class Michael De Benedictus, U.S. Army. PFC De Benedictus served with honor and made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Born on July 4, 1930, in Catskill, New York, Michael De Benedictus was the son of Camille and Margaret De Benedictus. He attended St. Patrick’s School and graduated in 1947. Prior to his military service, he worked as a salesman for Lerner’s Department Store.
PFC De Benedictus enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 13, 1948, and served in F Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regimental Combat Team. He was killed in action on September 9, 1950, during combat at the Pusan Perimeter in South Korea.
His service and sacrifice have been recognized with several honors, including the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
