Gallery 495 is delighted to present Janus, a dual exhibition featuring captivating works by Daniel Sierra and Mike McManus. Inspired by the two-faced Roman god of transitions and duality, Janus examines the dynamic interplay between past and present, urban and natural landscapes, and the stories that shape identity.
Daniel Sierra, a long-time Catskill, NY resident, began his artistic journey in 1980s Brooklyn, shaped by the energy of Paradise Garage and mentorship from Keith Haring. Dubbed the "Mosaic Madman" in Miami, he transformed abandoned spaces with bold ceramic tile mosaics, blending outsider, street, and pop art. Now based in Catskill, Sierra continues to challenge artistic boundaries, infusing his work with cultural nostalgia and urban edge.
A New York City native, Mike McManus views art as “a mode of survival,” infusing his work with themes of resilience, spirituality, and wholeness. Drawing from his urban upbringing, he blends nature and city through sculpture, painting, collage, and poetry. His art challenges notions of beauty and value, highlighting the overlooked and encouraging reflection on personal growth, acceptance, and grace. McManus’s practice bridges the internal and external, blending urban experiences with spiritual exploration.
