Ghost Dance: Picture of a Madman tells the extraordinary and tragic story of Ralph Albert Blakelock, the celebrated American painter whose work was thrust into the spotlight after his iconic piece Brook by Moonlight fetched a record $20,000 at auction in 1916. Written and performed by Blakelock’s great-great-granddaughter, Erica Knight, and directed by John Ahlin, this haunting solo performance explores Blakelock’s rise to fame and subsequent fall into madness, as he battled schizophrenia for 15 years while his family lived in poverty. Through his radical and visionary paintings, Blakelock’s influence on American art, from the Hudson River School to Abstract Expressionism, is revealed. This remarkable show offers an intimate glimpse into the life and mind of one of America’s most complex and misunderstood artists.
