Naturalists
The natural beauty of the Kaaterskill Clove drew environmentalists and naturalists to study the landscape.
The Kaaterskill Clove was the perfect place for Naturalists such as John Burroughs to observe and learn about the natural landscape and wildlife that populated the Catskill Mountains. With several high peaks throughout the region, they were able sketch out and notate their observations to share their essays about nature with their peers.
John Burroughs' essay, "The Heart of the Southern Catskills", tells of his climb up Slide Mountain, the highest Catskill peak. His summer home, Woodchuck Lodge, has been named a national Historic Landmark.
