How to Plan Your Ski Trip to the Great Northern Catskills
Make the most of your winter with a ski adventure in the Great Northern Catskills. Home to two incredible ski mountains with hundreds of acres of terrain, it’s the perfect place for a ski getaway with family and friends. With ongoing safety protocols due to COVID-19, it’s important to plan ahead, as ski mountains and lodging options have ever-evolving policies. So, get your skis and boards ready, and head to the mountains!
Tickets at Windham Mountain in Windham will be based on a Red & Green Capacity Calendar. Passholders can go anytime, but on Red Days there will be no tickets for sale in-person—they must be purchased in advance online. On Green Days, you can purchase tickets in-person or online—though advanced purchase is recommended. Hunter Mountain purchases can be made online or through the call center.
Don’t forget your scarves, neck warmers, and masks this ski season. Both Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain are requiring that masks or face coverings must be worn on chairlifts, indoor spaces, and outdoors where social distancing isn’t possible.
Social distancing—we’re all experts at this now, so be mindful of those around you! With capacity restrictions on lifts, Windham Mountain will be loading parties that travel to Windham together, otherwise, capacity will be restricted to four people per six-passenger, two per quad or one per triple or double chair. At Hunter Mountain, only related parties or two singles (on either side of the chairlift) will be seated together to maintain physical distancing. Social distancing measures will also be in place in all lift lines at both mountains.
Come prepared to be outside more than you may typically be, as lodges are at 50% occupancy. It’s recommended to use your car as your home base instead of planning to leave boots and items inside the lodge. Since dining will be geared more toward outdoor dining or to-go options, dressing extra warm will be important. Be sure to check out the new outdoor heated benches at Windham Mountain!
In addition to slopeside dining, explore the towns of Windham and Hunter/Tannersville to experience the local flavor. The Windham Local Public House and Millrock Restaurant offer classic dishes made using locally sourced ingredients. Jagerberg Beer Hall & Alpine Tavern is a go-to spot for beer and German-inspired food in Hunter while Last Chance Antiques & Cheese Cafe, Mama’s Boy Burgers, Maggie’s Krooked Café, and Jessie’s Harvest House are a few must-try places in Tannersville. Check ahead to see if you need to make a reservation.
Choose from slopeside options at Windham Mountain, such as Windham Mountain Village, or nearby Winwood Inn & Condominiums, and Kaaterskill Mountain Club, Liftside Village Condos, at Hunter Mountain—there’s no shortage of charming lodging. If you want something near the mountains, but not right there, Albergo Allegria in Windham and Washington Irving Inn in Tannersville provide beautiful places to recharge after a day on the slopes. Confirm COVID-related policies with the property prior to arriving.
